GOD’S JUDGMENT ON A NATION

God judges nations.

Scripture warns, “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord,” ( Ps.33:12). The opposite holds true as well, “The wicked shall be turned into hell and all the nations that forget God.” (Ps.9:17). God told the nation of Israel, “I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live.” (Deut.30:19).

As we just celebrated America’s birthday, how many more such birthdays can we expect to see if we continue to defy God?

George Mason, The father of the Bill of Rights, speaking at the Constitutional Convention declared: "As nations cannot be rewarded or punished in the next world, so they must be in this. By an inevitable chain of causes and effects, Providence punishes national sins by national calamities."

Thomas Jefferson understood this and said, “I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just; that his justice cannot sleep forever.” This is the same man who is credited for building the so-called wall of separation of church and state. We have allowed liberals to re-write our history and activist judges to strip away our Christian heritage. Obviously, Jefferson never intended this divorce between God and government as radical secularists promote today in his name.

Look at what the first Supreme Court justice, John Jay said, “Whether our religion permits Christians to vote for infidel rulers is a question which merits more consideration than it seems yet to have generally received either from the clergy or the laity. It appears to me that what the prophet said to Jehoshaphat about his attachment to Ahab ["Shouldest thou help the ungodly and love them that hate the Lord?" 2 Chronicles 19:2] affords a salutary lesson.” A man like this today would be laughed out of Washington, branded a right-wing nut. Look at the caliber of person we’re getting ready to put on our Highest Court today—how far we have fallen! As I watch the questioning of the nominee, by the Senate of Elena Kagan, I am reminded of the bar scene in Star Wars. I wonder what planet these creatures are from!

Let’s hear this solemn warning from another one of our Founding Fathers, “No people will tamely surrender their Liberties, nor can any be easily subdued, when knowledge is diffused and Virtue is preserved. On the Contrary, when People are universally ignorant, and debauched in their Manners, they will sink under their own weight without the Aid of foreign Invaders." ~Samuel Adams.

Paul wrote in Romans 11 concerning the judgment of God on the nation of Israel. He also warned the Gentiles that if they chose the same wicked road, they would face the same wrathful result. The Scripture says,

17 And if some of the branches were broken off, and you, being a wild olive tree, were grafted in among them, and with them became a partaker of the root and fatness of the olive tree,
18 do not boast against the branches. But if you do boast, remember that you do not support the root, but the root supports you.
19 You will say then, “Branches were broken off that I might be grafted in.”
20 Well said. Because of unbelief they were broken off, and you stand by faith. Do not be haughty, but fear.
21 For if God did not spare the natural branches, He may not spare you either.
(v.17-21)
