THE WINSOMENESS OF WISDOM
“Does not wisdom cry out, And understanding lift up her voice? She takes her stand on the top of the high hill, Beside the way, where the paths meet. She cries out by the gates, at the entry of the city, At the entrance of the doors: “To you, O men, I call, And my voice is to the sons of men.” (Proverbs 8:1-4 NKJV)
There is quite a contrast between the call of the whore in chapter seven and the cry of wisdom in chapter eight.
“And there a woman met him, With the attire of a harlot, and a crafty heart. She was loud and rebellious, Her feet would not stay at home. At times she was outside, at times in the open square, Lurking at every corner. So she caught him and kissed him; With an impudent face she said to him” (Proverbs 7:10-13).
The one beguiled by her is branded a fool—a dumb beast led to the slaughter, a man on his descent to hell.
Then, we come to the next chapter and wisdom is personified as a winsome woman, crying out for men to climb up to the high hill where she abides. It is a holy, happy, heavenly way.
When one embraces wisdom, they find an uplift rather than a downgrade. They become bright, rather than a brute. Instead of giving their riches to a harlot, they gain true riches from wisdom. How winsome she is!
Here is the promise of those who learn the wisdom of God found in His Word:
“Blessed is the man who listens to me, Watching daily at my gates, Waiting at the posts of my doors. For whoever finds me finds life, And obtains favor from the LORD” (Proverbs 8:34-35).
The folly of the world that brings death or the favor of the Lord that brings life—what will we choose?
