GOD THE SON PROCLAIMED

The Bible is sacred history—history being His story. In the Old Testament, you have God the Son prophesied as through types, symbols, and prophecies the Scriptures say, “Jesus is coming!”  The Gospels and Acts feature God the Son presented through His messages, model, ministry, and miracles, all declaring, “Jesus has come!”  Then the rest of the New Testament is God the Son proclaimed alerting us that, “Jesus is coming again!”  How then should we prepare to meet Him?  What kind of life should we live?

From Romans to Revelation, you find the implications of the incarnation. Jesus is explained and proclaimed.  Look at two texts, Romans 1:1-5 and Revelation 1:1-2.

“Paul, a bondservant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated to the gospel of God which He promised before through His prophets in the Holy Scriptures, concerning His Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who was born of the seed of David according to the flesh, and declared to be the Son of God with power according to the Spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead. Through Him we have received grace and apostleship for obedience to the faith among all nations for His name, among whom you also are the called of Jesus Christ.....” (Rom.1:1-5). From the first epistle of Paul, you see Jesus proclaimed.  He will be in the spotlight of all the epistles.

As we come to the close of the New Testament, we see that John is directing our attention to Jesus.

“The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave Him to show His servants—things which must shortly take place. And He sent and signified it by His angel to His servant John, who bore witness to the word of God, and to the testimony of Jesus Christ, to all things that he saw.” (Rev.1:1-2).

The message of the early church focused on Jesus.  Paul would say, “For I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified.” (1 Cor.2:2).  That is still our message today, whether our text is from the Old Testament or New Testament.  Jesus is the hero of holy history.

How will history conclude?  “He who testifies to these things says, ‘Surely I am coming quickly.’  Amen. Even so come, Lord Jesus!  The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all.  Amen.” (Rev.22:20-21).

I agree with John Newton, “Amazing grace, how sweet the sound, that saved a wretch like me.” I am so glad someone told me about Jesus!  He has changed my direction on earth and my destination in eternity!

MYSTERIES REVEALED: When and What

Read Matthew 24.

As Jesus pointed to the massive Temple and declared its destruction, the disciples immediately thought such a catastrophe must signal the end of the age.  They were not thinking of Christ’s death, resurrection, and ascension, with this interlude that has already lasted 2000 years and the return of Christ.  They held out the hope that the Messianic Kingdom was going to be established now, and thought this must herald it—so they sought an answer.

Remember, in reading this, that the church is not in view here.  Christ’s church will be built on His finished work of His crucifixion and resurrection and birthed after His ascension and the sending of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost.  This was a mystery—a hidden truth, that these twelve knew nothing about at the time.  The mystery awaited its explanation in the epistles and Revelation.  The content of Matthew 24 and 25 is, therefore, Jewish in focus, and the church is not mentioned.

The signs of the end of the age, mark all the “last days,” which began with Christ’s work on Calvary.  If you read Revelation 6 for instance and compare it with Matthew 24, you will find a synthesis of these signs that happen with the opening of the seven seals.

Some will argue, “Haven’t false messiahs, wars, famines, disease, earthquakes, and religious persecution, marked the last 2000 years?”  Yes!  But, the key is to note Jesus called these “birth pains,” (the meaning of “sorrows” in v.8). A pregnant woman will feel twinges of pain all during her term, but as the time for birth draws near, the labor pains escalate in frequency and intensity. So, it will be in the last days, until the climactic pain of the Great Tribulation and the birth of the New World with Christ’s return.

HERE COMES THE BRIDEGROOM!

Go forth, O daughters of Zion, And see King Solomon with the crown With which his mother crowned him On the day of his wedding, The day of the gladness of his heart. (Song of Solomon 3:11)

Our weddings seem to make the groom a supporting character, with the bride being the star of the show.  Have you ever read the write up in the newspaper?  It tells about the beauty of her dress--the length and design of it--and descriptions are glowingly given of her veil, bouquet, and the number and dress of her attendants.  You know how the wedding begins--the mothers are seated, and the pastor leads the groom and best man out a side door.  They wait and watch as the wedding march begins--then everyone stands as they play, "Here comes the bride!"  Down the center aisle she comes, escorted by her father--all eyes are on her.  Having officiated at a host of weddings, I can attest that I have never seen anything except a beautiful bride--though there have been a few close calls!

Weddings in Bible times were very different.  The groom got his due!  He wasn't an afterthought and accessory--he was the main attraction!  This is especially true when it was a royal wedding.  Here we see King Solomon coming to his wedding day.

The Song of Solomon expresses the lyrics of love.  It is the glorious gift of intimacy the Lord intends for a husband and wife to enjoy.  The poetic images are sensual, but not smutty.  They speak of pleasure without being pornographic.

Having said that, it is also appropriate to find in this an illustration of God's love for Israel, and Christ's love for the church.  We can see that Paul had no difficulty seamlessly weaving practical implication in the family with theological application in the church concerning marriage in Ephesians 5:22-32.

The first five verses of Song of Solomon, chapter three, show the passion that has been building during their courtship.  She desires him so, that she dreams of him--and in her mind seeks him that she might embrace him.  She longs for the consummation of their love--although she asks her friends to hold her accountable for maintaining her virginity until the wedding night (v.5).  The child of God understands that restless longing to be with Jesus--that nothing can compare with the joy of seeing Him face to face.

When the night is past, some golden daybreak Jesus will come.  King Solomon is seen coming in regal splendor to claim his bride in v.6-11.  It is the day of his wedding and he is glad!  Do we desire to see Christ?  He will delight to be with us!  That day will surely arrive.  I sense it is near!

Perhaps the angels will strum their harps and the hosts of heaven will sing, "Here comes the Bridegroom!"   What if it were today?

THE COMING WORLD DICTATOR

Let no one deceive you by any means; for that Day will not come unless the falling away comes first, and the man of sin is revealed, the son of perdition….  (2 Thessalonians 2:3)

I almost never carry cash.  I whip out a plastic card.  Gradually, the world is becoming a cashless society.  The technology is in place.  Because of identity fraud, as well as people stealing cards and PIN numbers, the card may soon be replaced with a computer chip implanted in the forehead or hand where a scanner will carry out the transaction.  Is this what the Book of Revelation calls the mark of the Beast?

Paul is discussing that very person here—a coming world dictator.  The world is poised on the threshold of welcoming such a leader.  One of the driving forces behind the European Union is the “fiscal cliff” that not only the United States, but nations around the world are about to drive off.  Combine this with the global implications of World War III breaking out in the Middle East—and we are on the brink of that—the world will enthusiastically accept the solution of a charismatic leader with his promises to solve these staggering problems.

To help us understand, it would be helpful for us to consider first THE REASON FOR THE EPISTLE.  Paul sets the context for this teaching in the first two verses of 2 Thessalonians 2.  He is writing for their correction and comfort.  The saints at Thessalonica had come under persecution. This led them to believe they had entered the Great Tribulation.  So, Paul speaks of “our gathering together to Him”—that is, the rapture of the church (see 1 Thess.4:13-18).  Although we may face the wrath of man, we will not face the wrath of God.  Paul comforts them in telling them that such a judgment is for the wicked and not His children.  Christ would not treat His Bride as He would His enemies.

So, Paul moves on to reveal THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE END (v.3). The Apostle provides an explanation as to why they could not be in the Tribulation Period as they feared. That would require apostasy and Antichrist to arise.  There will be a final apostasy. The falling away is the great departure from the faith, which produces a final, world religious system—the apostate church described in Revelation as Mystery Babylon, the Great Harlot.  The day of the Lord not only commences with the ultimate apostasy, but the ultimate Antichrist.  The spirit of Antichrist was already at work in apostolic times—a spirit that at some point will become incarnate in the Antichrist (I Jn.4:3).  We, however, aren’t waiting for the Antichrist, but Christ!

There in now THE RESTRAINT UPON THE EVIL (v.6-7).  The special ministry of the Holy Spirit through the church is to restrain evil as Christians function as salt and light.  The Restrainer must be taken out of the way before the Antichrist can be revealed. When the Rapture takes place and the church is removed, then earth will be fully demonized.

Then follows THE REVELATION OF THE ANTICHRIST (v.8-12). The apostle paints for us a portrait of the coming world dictator.  The populace will acclaim him to be the evolutionary pinnacle of man.  The Bible pictures him as the bottom of human depravity.  He is the vice-regent of Hell.  Antichrist will demand worship.  What he receives is wrath—and all who follow him, will also.  Things are moving this way.  Are you looking to the skies?  Jesus is coming!

CHEER UP!

“These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.”  (John 16:33)

Watch an hour of two of cable news before you go to bed, and you are sure to toss and turn with a troubled heart.  Imported right into your home will be all the carnage and destruction from near and far, burning graphic images into your mind, and driving peace from it.  While believers are not to succumb to naiveté, neither should we to yield to gloom and doom.  Just listen to how we talk!  So much of our conversation is about how bad things are, and anticipating worse.  Indeed, the world is careening toward judgment, but THAT IS NOT THE END!  The end of it all is Christ on the throne, paradise restored, and eternal joy for the people of God!  A woman knows the birth pains are part of the joy of childbirth (John 16:21).  She can look beyond the contractions to the celebration of new life—and this is the attitude that Jesus calls us to have in John 16:33.

We can cheer up because of Christ’s CRUCIFIXION (John 16:16-22, 29-33).  Here we observe this dichotomy—the darkness that would descend upon the disciples due to watching Jesus be seized and slain, but the light that would arise because of His atoning work on Calvary.  There would be no possibility of real peace in our hearts without experiencing peace with God—and that was only possible through putting away our sins.  This is what Jesus would accomplish in the horror of the cross; He would bring us the hope of forgiveness.  We are reconciled to God by the blood He shed so cheer up!

We can cheer up because of Christ’s RESURRECTION (John 16:16-22).  If the cross and the cemetery were the end of Him, then that would be the end of hope, yet He assured His followers repeatedly that He would see them again!  The lifeless eyes that closed in death would pop back open on the third day, as up from the grave He arose!  Jesus called them to look beyond the tribulation He would suffer, and see the triumph that He would secure.  We serve a risen Savior who has defeated death so cheer up!

We can cheer up because of Christ’s INTERCESSION (John 16:23-28).  After His resurrection, the disciples would face another disappointment—Jesus would leave them after forty days and they would watch Him ascend back into heaven.  Even in this, there would be a glorious purpose—He would be the intercessor for us to the Father—praying for us continually—and consider this: because of our relationship secured by Him, the way of bold access has been opened where we may come directly to the throne of grace!  Are you facing troubles today?  Take it to the Lord in prayer.  He is listening.  Cheer up!

We can cheer up because of Christ’s REVELATION (John 16:22).  We need not limit this promise to His resurrection, but see it extending to His revelation at His second coming.  There is no need to wring our hands and pace the floor today, when I know all will be well some glorious day!  Jesus has overcome the world!  The war is won and all that remains is the mopping up of some pockets of enemy resistance—and that day is approaching.  Soon and very soon, we are going to see the King!  Hallelujah!  Cheer up!

IT’S ABOUT TIME!

For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death till He comes.  (1 Corinthians 11:26)

“It’s about time!”  You’ve heard that—usually as an expression of exasperation or relief.  You may have also heard, “Time is money.”  It is more valuable than that.  If you lose money, there is the possibility of recovering it—or gaining more.  Every tick off the clock, however, is gone forever.  Are you squandering time, spending time—or investing it in that which has eternal significance?  Each opportunity to meet and share the Lord’s Supper is an important time on the calendar.  That family meal is about time.

It is A TIME FOR REMEMBRANCE (1 Cor.11:23-25).  The phrase, “in remembrance of Me,” is used twice.  When we take the time to take the bread, it is a reminder of Christ’s body—beaten, bruised and bloodied for us.  When we drink the cup, it is a memorial to His blood—the cleansing fountain that flows from Immanuel’s veins.  It is time to recall the greatest gift to meet our greatest need.  “It is finished!” (John 19:30) as to the work to be done on the cross, but we will never cease to worship Him for what He did.

It is A TIME FOR REFLECTION (1 Cor.11:27-32).  We prepare to partake of the Lord’s Supper with a season of self-examination.  A spiritual inventory is to be a regular feature of the believer’s life.  Where are you today in your walk with Christ?  How does it compare to this time last week, last month, or last year?  Are you making progress?  Questions we should consistently consider:

  • Are there any sins to confess?
  • Are there any relationships to mend?
  • Are there any commitments to honor?
The Lord’s Supper is a TIME FOR REDEDICATION (1 Cor.11:26)  There is not only the past dimension of remembrance—Jesus came and died for us—and the present aspect of reflection—Jesus is here by His Spirit and wants communion with us—there is, further, the promised season of return—Jesus is coming again and that challenges us to rededicate ourselves to live in light of eternity.  There will be a time when the Lord’s Supper will be superseded by the Lamb’s Supper (Rev.19:7-10).  There will be no need for the symbolism of the Lord’s Supper, for we will actually be in His visible presence in Heaven!  So we look to the future with anticipation—and that calls us to consecration.  Right now, I will redeem my time; I will rededicate myself to serving Him, so He will find me busy when He returns.

It’s about time!

GOD IS NOT THROUGH WITH THE JEW

“And so all Israel will be saved….”  (Romans 11:26a)

It would only take one word to convince me of the existence of God and the authority of Scripture: ISRAEL.  There is no explanation for how the Jews have survived and thrived unless God exists and the Bible is true.  Jews comprise less than a quarter of 1% of the world’s population, yet, they have known more prejudice and persecution than any race.  The four most influential people in human history are all Jews: Moses, Jesus, Paul and Marx.  This tiny nation is continually at the center of world events.  Why?  They are God’s chosen people.  Paul wants us to know that God is not through with the Jew!

When the church was born on the Day of Pentecost, it was exclusively Jewish.  A Jew named Peter preached about a Jewish Messiah and about 3,000 Jews were converted.  As the Gospel penetrated the Roman world, increasingly there was receptivity by Gentiles, and rejection by most Jews—and judicial hardness set in to a nation that predominately rejected Christ.  Still, God has never lacked a remnant of Jews who were not only racially identified with Abraham’s line, but religiously infused with Abraham’s faith!  This is spiritual Israel—and though they are few, there are Messianic Jews today—not only born with Abraham’s DNA, but born again in Christ (Rom.11:1-6)!

The tragedy of Israel, as a whole, is a nation of great privilege, but grave rebellion.  Prophet after prophet issued a call to repentance. They were chastened and carried into captivity.  At last, God sent His Son to them, but they demanded His death.  God raised Him from the dead, and still they would not believe.  No one—Jew or Gentile—can harden their heart for so long without it having a spiritually deadening effect.  That blindness is the judgment of God for those who refuse to see and come to the Light (Rom.11:7-10).

Paul reaches into the realm of agriculture to illustrate this spiritual principle (Rom.11:11-24).  The salvation of the Gentiles has Jewish roots—the law given to Israel convicts us of sin.  The Savior who converts us was a Jew.  The Apostles who shared the Gospel were Jews.  I’m a Christian today because of the outreach of Jewish missionaries 2,000 years ago!  Israel is God’s cultivated olive tree.  Gentiles are branches of a wild olive tree.  The branches of unbelieving Jews were broken off, and believing Gentile branches were grafted in.  God is looking for fruit, and Israel as a nation had none, and so were judged—as will Gentiles be who spurn His salvation.

God is not through with the Jew!  They will be grafted back in!  God’s covenant to Abraham was a covenant of grace with that man and his descendants.  It was renewed with Isaac and Jacob, and expanded with David.  Those promises cannot be broken (Rom.11:25-32).  That covenant was unconditional.  Israel’s sin brought chastisement and is still doing so today, but God has not and cannot ultimately cast them away!  The world is turning once more against the Jews—even our own government—which will bring our destruction.  Christ will return and deliver Israel, ushering in earth’s golden age!  How exciting!  Let’s sing the doxology (Rom.11:33-36)!

SIGNS OF THE TIMES

Now as He sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him privately, saying, “Tell us, when will these things be? And what will be the sign of Your coming, and of the end of the age?”  (Matthew 24:3)

As Jesus taught His disciples with the magnificent Temple as a backdrop, they were impressed with the massive stones that made up its construction.  Jesus shocks them when He tells them that judgment is coming and the utter destruction of the Temple is near.  They assume that He means the end of the age was coming and the Messianic Kingdom would be established—for what else might explain such?  Jesus tells them, in effect, “Not yet.  Some other things will happen first.”  None will know the day or the hour (Matt.24:36).  The downfall of Jerusalem and the destruction of the Temple in AD 70, when the Roman legions would quell a Jewish uprising, would not be the end of the age—but would foreshadow it.  On a greater scale, what happened then previews a future time when Jerusalem will be trampled underfoot by Gentile powers, the Jews will face extreme persecution, and a new Roman Caesar—the Antichrist—will dominate the world.

The period that Scripture calls, “the last days,” began when Christ was rejected.  It encompasses the time from when the world refused to bow to Him until He seizes dominion at His second coming.  The signs in Matthew 24:4-8 are characteristic of every generation from the first to now the twenty-first century.  “All these are the beginning of sorrows.” (v.8) The analogy Jesus uses is of a woman giving birth.  Labor begins and intensifies until the baby arrives amid the peak of the contractions and pain, but the result is new life.  So that the wars, famines, earthquakes—all these sorrows—will intensify in frequency and severity until they reach the end.  That is when a New World is born in which Christ reigns and righteousness resides.  The climax of these contractions is in the seven year Tribulation Period.  You can read Matthew 24 and Revelation 6 as a seamless narrative.  Jesus is describing the opening of the seven-sealed scroll, which John would later see in his vision.  The last three and one-half years are so horrific as to be termed the Great Tribulation (Matt.24:21-28).  When the Jews on are the verge of annihilation, they will cry out for Messiah to deliver them, and Christ returns, accompanied by His angel army (v.30-31).  The church—His Bride—will likewise be at His side.

While it is true that none can know with complete precision when the final chapter of human history will be completed, we can sense the season approaching.  As a cool morning in September, with dogwoods and sourwoods turning crimson, tell us fall and then winter are coming, so we can see the events building on the world scene and believe the end is near.  The event that will trigger the end times will be the rapture of the church—Christ’s taking of His Bride to Heaven to escape the wrath to fall on a Christ-rejecting world—along with the preparing of the nation of Israel to receive Him at His return.  As a church we are not so much looking at the signs, but looking for the Savior!  In light of the end, we are called to watch with expectancy (v.42-44) and to work with urgency (v.45-51).  Today might be the day the trumpet sounds to summon us home!

HOPE IS PROMISED: Certainty Is Given in God’s Promise

Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.  And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name JESUS.  He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David.  And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end.”  (Luke 1:30-33)

We human beings have problems with promises—we break them!  But Scripture says that “God is not a man, that He should lie, nor a son of man, that He should repent.
Has He said, and will He not do? Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good?
”  (Numbers 23:19)  We see several promises Gabriel brought from God.

There is THE PROMISE OF CHRIST’S GRACE.  “Then the angel said to her, ‘Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.  And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name JESUS.’” (v.30-31)  That promise is bound up in the name, “Jesus.”  Jesus means, “Jehovah is salvation.”  For centuries the Old Testament promise of a Savior had been unfulfilled—but that was about to change!  Jesus came to span the gulf between holy God and sinful man in paying the price for our sins on the cross.  He reaches out one hand on the cross to the Righteous Judge and stretches out the other to the condemned criminal and they meet in the Propitiation He is in Himself.  The Savior is suspended between heaven and earth to form the bridge between the two realms.

Then, there is THE PROMISE OF CHRIST’S GREATNESS. “He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest” (v.32a).  There have been many great men who have walked the stage of human history, but Jesus towers above them all, for He was more than the Son of Man; He was and is the Son of God!  As a Gospel song writer affirmed, “He is higher than the highest; greater than the great.”  When we align ourselves with Him, the lowliest of the low is lifted into His royal family and becomes an heir with Him!

THE PROMISE OF CHRIST’S GOVERNMENT.  “the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David.  And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end.” (v.32b-33)  This promise has yet to be fulfilled—but as the promises connected to Christ’s first coming were realized, we may rest assured those of His second coming will be!  This world is governed today by those who promise much to gain power and then trample on the very promises they made to retain it.  Increasingly, we see tyranny on one hand and anarchy on the other.  Such is the world under the curse.  But the King of kings is coming to reverse the curse and establish peace and righteousness on the planet.  Hold to the hope of His promise; He is coming!

THE HOPE OF THE CROSS OF CHRIST: A Promised Consummation

For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death till He comes. (1 Corinthians 11:26)

We are told to observe the Lord’s Supper until Christ returns.  As we look to the past and Christ’s death on the cross, and look about us in the present communion we share with the Savior and the saints, we must also look ahead and above for the King who will return—not crowned with thorns, but glory; not with spikes in His hands, but the scepter of universal dominion.  What a day that will be!

There is this dimension of the meal—that looks to the future and the Marriage Supper of the Lamb.  That is when communion will be complete.  One of our church members, Harry Scruggs wrote a poem that speaks of this reality in a powerful way:

WHEN COMMUNION WITH HIM IS COMPLETE

When you’ve dipped in the blood that was spilled in your stead
And you’ve drunk from the cup and eaten the bread
When your sacrifice of praises is laid at His feet
Then communion with Him is complete.

When the power of the Word scales the walls of your heart
And breaks down the barriers that keep you apart
When beams from the Son cause the shadows to flee
Then communion with Him is complete.

When you drink from the well and your thirst finds relief
And trust in the Word changes doubt to belief
When your hope and your faith overcome your defeat
Then communion with Him is complete.

When the cares of the world all have been laid aside
And love for the Savior has diminished your pride
When His will for your life of Him you entreat
The communion with Him is complete.

When the King of the Ages you’ve met face to face
And knelt in His presence and His glory embraced
When “To God Be the Glory” you forever repeat
The communion with Him is complete.

BLOOD MOON

“The sun shall be turned into darkness, And the moon into blood, Before the coming of the great and awesome day of the LORD.”  (Joel 2:31)

There are those who view the series of four “blood moons” which began on April 15, and climax on September 28, 2015 as signaling the end of the age.  These are lunar eclipses where the earth’s shadow causes the moon to take on a reddish hue.  They are rare, and much is being made that the first began on Passover, and the last happens on the beginning of the Feast of Tabernacles—and the linkage with these Jewish festivals has led some to declare there is prophetic significance for Israel.  The implication is that Israel is going to enter the culmination of her suffering, worldwide cataclysm will come, all paving the way for the Second Advent of Christ.

Perhaps…but, maybe not.

The problem with these lunar eclipses—unusual as they may be, even in their timing—is that these are natural phenomena.  The moon turning to blood as described in Joel and the Book of Revelation also involve darkness for the sun and the stars—the result of God’s wrath being poured out on the earth.

I looked when He opened the sixth seal, and behold, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became like blood.  ‎And the stars of heaven fell to the earth, as a fig tree drops its late figs when it is shaken by a mighty wind.  Then the sky receded as a scroll when it is rolled up, and every mountain and island was moved out of its place.  And the kings of the earth, the great men, the rich men, the commanders, the mighty men, every slave and every free man, hid themselves in the caves and in the rocks of the mountains, and said to the mountains and rocks, “Fall on us and hide us from the face of Him who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb!  For the great day of His wrath has come, and who is able to stand?”  (Rev.6:12-17)

The volcanic ash and clouds of dark smoke from fires, will fill the skies and blot out the sun and turn the moon red.  Asteroids and meteors will plummet from space and their impact on the earth will rock the world and send more dust into the air.  This is what makes that “blood moon” of the end times, which is certainly different than what we are witnessing now.

If I understand prophecy correctly—and certainly pray that I do—I am not planning on being around to see these things first hand.  I’m not looking for a moon to turn red, but for the Son to come back!

How close are we to the rapture of the church?  I’m expecting Jesus to come for His Bride at any moment.  I need to be prepared today, and not think I have until next year and the next lunar eclipse to get ready to meet the Lord.

I think we are very close—but I could be wrong.  We are to watch for Him to come today, but we are told that none know the date of Christ’s return (Matt.24:36).

The sensationalism and speculation do fulfill prophecy, however.  Like the book I read, “88 Reasons Christ Must Return in ‘88” or the sequels in which the author predicted the rapture in 1989, 1993 and 1994, and the late Harold Camping’s proclamation that Christ was coming in 2011, give a skeptical world more reason to ridicule the Christian faith.  If the “blood moon” predictions fall through, that is more fuel to the fire—which by the way Scripture does predict, “knowing this first: that scoffers will come in the last days, walking according to their own lusts, and saying, ‘Where is the promise of His coming? For since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of creation.’ ”  (2 Pet.3:3-4).

There is a convergence of things happening in our world that seems to be speeding us toward the end.  Events in the Middle East, where the players in the final act are taking their place on the stage, should capture our attention.  Prophecies that seemed so incredible, now appear plausible with the advancement of technology we have witnessed in this generation.  If you asked me, “Do you expect Jesus to come in your lifetime?” I would answer, “Yes!”  If He wants to dispatch the Son during the “blood moon” of 2015, that’s a Sovereign God’s call.  He does what and when He wants to do so—He is God.

I am not.  God hasn’t given me a vote.  Christ might come tomorrow—or it could be a thousand years.  What God has done is give me an assignment.  The angels issued a promise and a mission for the disciples who watched Jesus ascend from the Mount of Olives—the very spot where He will one day set foot again—“who also said, ‘Men of Galilee, why do you stand gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will so come in like manner as you saw Him go into heaven.’ ” (Acts 1:11).  You can be a star-gazer or a soul-winner!  The Lord wants us to warn people that He is coming back and Judgment Day is at hand, with a view of winning them to faith in Christ.

If you want to buy a book about “blood moons” you can.  The money might be better spent on giving to missions so that fewer are left unprepared for the end time.  But, don’t ever lose sight of the Blessed Hope of the return of Jesus Christ!  He is coming again!

Maranatha!  Come, Lord Jesus!

HERE'S HOPE: WE WILL BE PREPARED

“looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ” (Titus 2:13)

The hope that commenced when we received Christ, and that continues to build as we walk with Christ in this life, will consummate in all its fullness when we see Him face to face.   Having been saved from the penalty of sin in justification, and being saved from the power of sin through sanctification, I will be saved from the presence of sin.  That’s glorification.

I’m "looking for the blessed hope," aren’t you?  Some golden daybreak Jesus will come!  The Savior whom we have heard of, we will see with our eyes!

This has a very practical effect during this present time.  John wrote, "everyone who has this hope in him purifies himself, just as He is pure" (1 John 3:3).   The blessed hope of Titus 2:13 is set in the context of verses12 and 14.   I paraphrase:

teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age, [and what motivates us to live godly in the present age is that we are] ‎ looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, [the One who saved us and we will see someday] who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself His own special people, zealous for good works.

Some decry prophecy and say, “Some are so heavenly-minded they are no earthly good.”  If that is true of anyone, then they have missed the whole point.  Immersed in end-time charts and running from one prophetic conference to another, they are “ever learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.” (2 Tim.3:7)

The most important aspect of prophecy is a call to readiness.  I would state it this way and can back it with Scripture, “Only those who are truly heavenly minded are of any earthly good!”  Heed what Peter wrote:

10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up.
11 Therefore, since all these things will be dissolved, what manner of persons ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness,  ‎
12 looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be dissolved, being on fire, and the elements will melt with fervent heat?  ‎
13 Nevertheless we, according to His promise, look for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells.  ‎
14 Therefore, beloved, looking forward to these things, be diligent to be found by Him in peace, without spot and blameless; (2 Peter 3:10-14).
