A BUFFET OF BLESSINGS

I love buffets.  You come to these long lines of delicious foods of all varieties, and you can zero in on what you like, take ample samples, and stuff yourself.  The book of Proverbs is much like that from a spiritual standpoint—a buffet of blessings.  You certainly get that kind of variety in chapter eighteen.  Today, we will look at a few tasty truths to nourish our souls.  Remember, Jesus said, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.” (Matt.4:4).

1.  GOD IS OUR SAVIOR.  “The name of the LORD is a strong tower; The righteous run to it and are safe.” (v.10). Salvation is not found in our works, but in God’s.  Calling upon His name is our salvation (see Rom.10:9, 10, 13). God’s name represents His nature.  It stands for all He is, so to call on Him is to find a refuge. Not only does He save us initially when we call on Him and He makes us righteous, but as we righteous ones live in this hostile world, He remains our Defender, as we pray to Him, and find Him mighty to save.  As Luther wrote, “A mighty fortress is our God.”

2.  WISDOM IS OUR TEACHER. “The heart of the prudent acquires knowledge, And the ear of the wise seeks knowledge.” (v.15).  The wisdom of God is found in the Word of God, and a prudent person seeks it diligently.  Each day, we should come to the Lord to teach us from His Word.  Read your Bible.  Read great writers who have walked with God. Listen to your pastor and Bible teachers who dispense doctrine. You will be blessed if you feed at the table of truth.

3.   MARRIAGE IS OUR GIFT. “He who finds a wife finds a good thing, And obtains favor from the LORD.”  (v.22). There are a select few to whom God blesses with the gift of singleness. But, most of us will marry.  Make sure you get God’s gift for you, and don’t open someone else’s!  There are those who made an impulse “purchase,” only to unwrap it and find it came from Satan’s store and not God’s gift shop!  There is a great difference between a Ruth and a Jezebel.

4.  FRIENDSHIP IS OUR HELP.    “A man who has friends must himself be friendly, But there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.” (v.24). If you have a good friend, you have someone who will stick with you in the fiercest storms. Where family might not support you, you can count on a faithful friend. How do you get friends like that?  Be such a friend!  We reap what we sow.

I hope you enjoyed this meal prepared for you today!  Breakfast with the Bible—yum!  Thank you Lord for your salvation, Scripture, a sweet spouse, and supportive friends with which I am blessed!

ALL IN THE FAMILY

Proverbs 17:1-2, 6, 14, 21, 25
Solomon shares with us many principles for family life throughout the Proverbs, and in this chapter there are several featured.  Sadly, he failed to abide by these truths in many ways, showing that it is easier to say it than to do it.  Yet, if we will apply these axioms, then family life can be the closest thing to heaven on earth.  Failing in the family will bring the closest thing to hell on earth.

1.  HARMONY IN THE HOME IS HEAVENLY. “Better is a dry morsel with quietness, Than a house full of feasting with strife. The beginning of strife is like releasing water; Therefore stop contention before a quarrel starts.” (v.1, 14). You can live in a palace, but without peace in that home, you are impoverished. The presence of strife ruins the appetite. The best place to stop an argument is before it starts. A heart full of love, the spirit of forgiveness, humility, and self-control, exercised by one another, brings such heavenly harmony.  Let us pray for the Holy Spirit to descend as the Dove of Peace on our household. It isn’t my way or my spouse’s way, but God’s way that we ought to seek.

2. GROUNDING CHILDREN IN THE TRUTH BRINGS BLESSING.  “A wise servant will rule over a son who causes shame, And will share an inheritance among the brothers.  He who begets a scoffer does so to his sorrow, And the father of a fool has no joy.  A foolish son is a grief to his father, And bitterness to her who bore him.” (v.2, 21, 25). Here we see the opposite.  There is shame and sorrow when children are not grounded in the Word of God.  Therefore, let us seek to “bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord” (Eph.6:4). Solomon knew what he was talking about. His son Rehoboam failed to receive these truths.

3.  HAVING CHILDREN AND GRANDCHILDREN CAN BE GLORIOUS. “Children’s children are the crown of old men, And the glory of children is their father.” (v.6 NKJV). When children can glory in their father—watching him walk with God, love their mother, and lead them in truth, they may grow up to follow in his footsteps and enable him to know the glory of grandchildren.  Our children’s children can be such a source of delight!  As the old fellow said, “If I had known grandkids would be so much fun, I would have had them first!”

May the Lord help us build our home according to the Bible blueprint!  Let us study, submit to, and share these Scriptural principles in our family.

LOVE OR LUST?

“Drink water from your own cistern, And running water from your own well. Should your fountains be dispersed abroad, Streams of water in the streets? Let them be only your own, And not for strangers with you. Let your fountain be blessed, And rejoice with the wife of your youth.” (Proverbs 5:15-18)

Sex is not sinful.  God invented it.  He wired us up as sexual beings—male and female.  Indeed, it is for the procreation of the species, but more than that—it is for the pleasure of the spouses.  There is a binding power that goes beyond the physical—extending into the spiritual and emotional realm, when the two become one flesh.

The problem is that this powerful force has become perverted through sin.  What many call, “making love,” is actually fulfilling lust.  It is not about giving to the other person, but getting from them.  Coming together as husband and wife in the commitment of marriage is a wondrous thing, but to do so outside of that covenant relationship is a wicked thing.  The former is delightful and the latter destructive. God’s commandments are not meant to kill our joy, but to kindle it with a holy fire.

Think of it this way.  A fire contained inside a wood stove will heat your house all winter, but let that fire escape confinement and it will burn your house down.  That is the way sexual expression is.  In the arms of your mate, it will keep the relationship warm, but in the arms of an immoral person, it will consume you.  You can look at a fence in two ways.  You can view it as a barrier to keep you from getting something you want, or you can see it as a protection to guard something from harm.  The Lord took sex and put it behind a fence called marriage, and he did it to preserve our joy—not to prevent it.

Adults, let us model faithfulness to marriage.  Let us teach our children  and grandchildren the truth that the world mocks.  Young reader, heed this message.  You will be glad you did.  If we have failed, let us repent and renew our commitment to God’s wisdom.

WHAT’S LOVE GOT TO DO WITH IT?

You may recall Tina Turner’s pop music hit from years ago that posed this question.  As we approach Valentine’s Day—a time designated to celebrate love—it is an uncomfortable conversation we need to have.  Turner’s song was very cynical—conveying that the relationship of man and women is merely physical in nature and love is just a romantic ideal— an antiquated notion.  Many people look at marriage and love that way—even among those who claim Christianity as their faith.

The numbers are staggering.  The shocking statistics from the Federal Government Centers for Disease Control finds 60% of women and 67% of men believe, “Living together before marriage may help prevent divorce.”  The numbers of women and men who agreed, “A young couple should not live together unless they are married has been decreasing from 34.7% in 2002 to 30.8% in 2006-2010, down to 28% in 2013.  I would like to think the attitudes among those in Bible-believing churches would be the reverse of this, but from what I hear and see, those convictions may be eroding.  With each passing year, the culture more than the Scripture seems to direct our morals.

Times have changed—but, God has not.  His standards have not.

Sex isn’t dirty.  It is a precious gift of God who made us sexual beings and designed it for procreation—and also pleasure—within the bounds of holy matrimony. God wasn’t trying to rob us of fun, but rather His commands are for our benefit so that we may experience ultimate joy.  The fact is “trying it out” by cohabitation does not help prevent divorce, but studies show that the guilt and shame—the self-centered baggage—carried into marriage increases the odds the marriage will fail.  A fire in the fireplace can heat your home on a cold winter’s night.  Let that fire escape its barrier and it will burn the house down!

What’s love got to do with it?  Everything—true love, God’s way.  Much of what is described as love today is lust.

Marriage is honorable among all, and the bed undefiled; but fornicators and adulterers God will judge. (Hebrews 13:4 NKJV)  A sobering truth, isn’t it?  Because I love you, I must warn you.

Thankfully, there is grace and mercy available from the Lord.  We can turn from our sin and seek Him.  His way is always best.  May God use His Word to shape us and His Spirit to convict us in this area. I can go astray in this sexually explicit society.  If I don’t stay close to God and close to my spouse, Satan can find an easy target.  If David, a man after God’s own heart, could yield to temptation, any of us can.  Pray for one another.  Pray for marriages.  Pray for purity.  As we come to Valentine’s Day, may we celebrate true love!

A PURE WALK IN A PORNOGRAPHIC WORLD

For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you should abstain from sexual immorality....  (I Thessalonians 4:3)

Playboy magazine has decided to stop publishing nude pictures.  The pioneers of porn can no longer profitably produce that which is available for free in the most graphic form to anyone on the internet.  We live in a pornographic world.  Yet, the Bible calls us to a pure walk in this evil environment.  One must stay very close to God not to go astray—but you can.  That is the thrust of 1 Thessalonians 4:1-8.

God is not against sex.  He invented it.  Sex within marriage is wonderful.  God's design is not just for the procreation of the species, but the pleasure of the spouse.  Genesis 2 portrays the beauty of husband and wife, naked and unashamed.  Fire within a stove will keep your house warm, but if it gets out it will burn it down.  The fire of sex can keep a marriage hot, but outside those bounds becomes destructive.  God doesn't want to keep us from pleasure, but from pain.  He does not mean to deny sex, but to delay it until their is a covenant relationship.

Yet, premarital sex seems the accepted thing.  It is the thought of "test driving a car"--but, people are not vehicles.  It's not just the vice of teens and young adults--senior adults are increasingly shacking up for financial considerations.

Not only is premarital sex a sin, but so is extramarital sex.  That is adultery.  It is a betrayal of trust.

We further are forbidden to yield to “passion of lust” (v.5).  Other translations render this “passionate desire”; “concupiscence”; “lustful desire”  The Greek word is epithymia and it means surrender to sensuality and sexual obsession. That fuels the billion dollar porn industry—no longer just for lecherous old men, but epidemic even among women.  The rise of child pornography, sexual violence, homosexuality, and all kinds of perversion is due to this surrender to sensuality (see Rom.1:24-32).  Lust has an insatiable appetite—never appeased.

Another evil is expressed as to “take advantage of and defraud” (v.6).  Other translations render it: “overstepping the rights of and wronging” ; “transgress and wrong” ; “take advantage of and exploit.”   It is a composite of two Greek terms meaning to raise desires that cannot be legitimately fulfilled and taking that which is not yours.  Those desires are raised by provocative dress, sexual innuendo, and physical contact that may stop short of intercourse, but nevertheless is immoral.  You don’t have to go all the way to go too far!  We show portions of our anatomy that should only be seen by our spouse and touch portions of the body meant only for our mate.

The positive dimension of this is a call to sanctification and holiness.  This means to be set apart for God.  It calls for consecration (v.1-3a).  We are to present our body to God.  We belong to Him.  He created us and redeemed us, so that we are doubly His.  This consecration should lead to control (v.4).   It is possible or God wouldn’t command it.  We may argue, “I’m only human.” Not if you’re a child of God!  You are a partaker of the Divine nature now!  An additional help is to meditate on the consequences of sexual sin (v.6-8),  This is not something to take lightly.  God does not.  Forgiveness is possible, but let us not use grace as an excuse for disobedience!

UNEQUALLY YOKED

The name of the man was Nabal, and the name of his wife Abigail.  And she was a woman of good understanding and beautiful appearance; but the man was harsh and evil in his doings.  (1 Samuel 25:3)

I have known too many young people—especially ladies—who have attempted missionary marriage.  They meet some old boy—they think him charming and good looking—and are attracted to him.  The spiritual side of the equation is set aside as the romance develops.  They decide they can charm him into receiving Christ.  Her (and sometimes his) thought is, “If I marry them, I will get him (or her) to go to church with me.  I’ll pray real hard.  God will save him (or her) and we will have a Christian home!”  That seldom happens.  Usually, rather than pull the unbeliever toward Christ, the unbeliever pulls the Christian down.  It is a recipe for strife and sorrow.  This is why God in His infinite wisdom warns in His Word, “Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers.  For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness?  And what communion has light with darkness?”  (2 Cor.6:14)

There are other occasions where two unbelievers wed, and then one comes to faith.  It was a situation fairly common in the first century as the Gospel came to the Gentile world.  The question then arose, “Should I stay in the marriage?”  Paul addressed that in 1 Cor.7:12-16, essentially saying that if the unbeliever will remain in the marriage, then the Christian should be faithful to his or her vows.  The Christian may in this instance be the channel of grace to win the unbelieving mate to the Lord.  Even if not, the child of God is to honor their marriage, unless the unbeliever decides to divorce.  Then, you let them go.

Marriage can be a messy business.  Even at its best, there will be challenges in fusing two individuals into a single unit.  When there is an unequal yoke, then the difficulties can be exponential.  An Old Testament illustration of this is found in 1 Samuel 25.  We read of a charming woman of character by the name of Abigail, who wed a self-centered, arrogant jerk named Nabal.  His name meant, “Fool,” and was an appropriate description.  Yet, Abigail remained faithful to him and trusted God to work things out.

When Nabal mistreats David, and the future king of Israel is on his way with a band of warriors to kill Nabal and all the males of his household, Abigail intercedes for her husband.  It would have been easy to sit back and say, “Let the fool get what he deserves!”  That is not the nature of love, and she shows the sacrificial nature of true love.  There will be those occasions where a believer’s intercession for God to spare their sinful spouse the judgment they deserve will lead to that person’s eventual salvation.  If you are unequally yoked don’t stop praying!

Abigail not only shows love, but she demonstrates faith.  She does the difficult thing because it is the right thing—trusting God to take care of her.  God does!  When the drunk Nabal sobers up and realizes how close he was to death, he has a stroke, becomes paralyzed and dies within days.  Abigail was then free to remarry, and David knows a good thing when he sees it!

If you are considering a marriage to an unbeliever—don’t!  If you are married to one already—stay!  Love them and trust God—faithful to your commitment to Christ and your vows.

A WORLD UPSIDE DOWN

(This is the manuscript I had prepared for my sermon yesterday in response to the legalization of same-sex marriage. It is what I would have said if I had an hour to preach. I had 20 minutes--that sermon as delivered should be posted in a day or two--if you prefer that format, and that length! You will get the core of it. God bless!--Pastor Dennis)

A WORLD UPSIDE DOWN

Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; Who put darkness for light, and light for darkness; Who put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!  (Isaiah 5:20)

When is a person not a person?  When they are a piece of property.  That is what the Supreme Court ruled in the Dred Scott decision in 1857.  Scott had sued to obtain his freedom.  Chief Justice Roger Taney ruled that because Scott was simply considered the private property of his owners, that he was subject to the Fifth Amendment to the United States Constitution, prohibiting the taking of property from its owner "without due process."  Strike one!

When is a baby not a baby?  When it is a fetus.  The Supreme Court in its infamous Roe v. Wade decision in 1973 made abortion legal.  Since then 54.5 million babies have been brutally butchered—their mother’s womb meant to be a sanctuary turned into an execution chamber.  Strike two!

When is a marriage defined as between a man and woman not the only definition of marriage?  When the Supreme Court says it can also be a union of two of the same gender.  That was the irrational, unconstitutional decision rendered by 5 of the 9 justices on this past Friday.  Strike three!

Now in baseball, three strikes and you’re out.  Have we crossed the point of no return for America?  The final judgment will not be rendered by nine men and women robed in black, but by one Judge robed in white who sits on the throne in the Supreme Court of Heaven.  When will He say that America has gone too far?

Here is what I do know.  The inhumanity inflicted on a race of people whose only crime was to be born with darker skin led to their cries of pain reaching God’s ears.  America was plunged into Civil War, where on both North and South, the greatest loss of life occurred in any of our wars—620,000.  Lincoln said this in his second inaugural address, “If we shall suppose that American slavery is one of those offenses which, in the providence of God, must needs come, but which, having continued through His appointed time, He now wills to remove, and that He gives to both North and South this terrible war as the woe due to those by whom the offense came, shall we discern therein any departure from those divine attributes which the believers in a living God always ascribe to Him? Fondly do we hope, fervently do we pray, that this mighty scourge of war may speedily pass away. Yet, if God wills that it continue until all the wealth piled by the bondsman's two hundred and fifty years of unrequited toil shall be sunk, and until every drop of blood drawn with the lash shall be paid by another drawn with the sword, as was said three thousand years ago, so still it must be said ‘the judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether.’”

Now since 1973, the blood of the little ones torn to pieces, burned to death with chemicals, their brains sucked out with vacuum hoses, and when sometimes still surviving the abortion procedure, only to be suffocated, having their spinal cord snipped with scissors, tossed into a toilet, discarded to whimper alone in a closet until they die.  Millions of little voices, crying out to God for vengeance!  The Creator who takes notice of a little sparrow fluttering to the ground and dying, surely knows each one of these babies made in His image and weeps for them.  Meanwhile His anger builds—How long, O Lord?

Then this Friday—legalizing perversion—shaking our fist in the face of God—that which grieves a Holy God is now celebrated.  The rainbow colors illumine the White House.  “A great victory for the United States,” the President exults.  Those rejoicing should read the story of Belshazzar’s party in Babylon documented in Daniel 5 to see how such pompous parties may end.  When Justice Anthony Kennedy and four others affixed their names to the majority opinion legalizing same sex marriage in the U.S. they may have signed America’s death certificate.  Listen to Isaiah’s warning, “Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; Who put darkness for light, and light for darkness; Who put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!”  (Isaiah 5:20)

The world is upside down.

How are we to respond?

1.  PRAYER FOR SPIRITUAL AWAKENING.  The  ills of America cannot be cured with elections, legislation or court decisions—that crowd is a contributor to the mess!  Someone correctly said that neither a donkey nor an elephant can save us—it takes a Lamb—the Lord Jesus is our only hope!  Unless there is a mighty move of God, America is going to fall.  2 Chronicles 7:14 is our Biblical imperative.  The great need is not in the culture, but in the church.  Sinners do what sinners do.  The world can only impact the culture as light and salt when we are distinctively different.  Instead the world has impacted the church.  Scripture warns, “For the time has come for judgment to begin at the house of God; and if it begins with us first, what will be the end of those who do not obey the gospel of God?” (1 Pet.4:17)  Revival or wrath—which one will descend from heaven?   Our problems are spiritual and require spiritual solutions.  If a spiritual awakening comes to America then a government transformation can come.  Without that there is no political answer.  What if spiritual awakening should sweep across America?  Before you scoff at that don’t forget nothing is too hard for the Lord!  Following I describe a political framework to build on the spiritual foundation.

2.  PARTICIPATE IN REAL CHANGE.  Christians are citizens of two kingdoms.  Too often we think that if we just elect the right President or a different senator or congressman that everything will change.  It has not and will not.  The faces of leadership change—the pendulum swings from one party to the next—but most go up to D.C. and sell their soul; they settle into the same old progressive nonsense.  Both parties propose government solutions—the Democrats want to micromanage every part of our lives, as well as tax and spend us into oblivion and the Republicans say different but then do the same thing, just slower.  The Supreme Court—not only on Friday, but two other outlandish decisions on Thursday—usurped authority and made laws contrary to their Constitutional role.  “The Founders knew the federal government might one day become drunk with the abuses of power. The most important check to this power is Article V. Article V gives states the power to call a convention for the purpose of proposing amendments to the Constitution.  By calling a convention of the states, we can stop the federal spending and debt spree, the power grabs of the federal courts, and other misuses of federal power. The current situation is precisely what the Founders feared, and they gave us a solution we have a duty to use.” (http://www.conventionofstates.com/)   An informed citizenry with a moral backbone could rebuild this one nation under God.

What if neither occur?  What if there is no spiritual revival and no political reform?

3.  LET THE CHURCH BE THE CHURCH ANYWAY.  Whatever society does, we must do what Christ has commanded us to do—to preach the Gospel, calling sinners to repentance and offering forgiveness and salvation. Should America turn back to God, it would only be a reprieve from judgment.  According to Scripture the day of reckoning is coming.  Imagine that this world is the Titanic.  It has hit the iceberg called sin (that happened in Gen.3).  It is sinking and nothing can stop that.  Our task is to man the lifeboats and get as many on as we can.  It will not be an easy job.  People will hate us for telling the truth.  But we must never respond with hate.  The good folks in the Mother Emanuel A.M.E. Church in Charleston, S.C. showed us that—and love is a powerful.  Love does win!  God’s kid of love, that is. It is increasingly likely that persecution will come to the church.  Four of the Supreme Court justices spoke to the grave danger to religious liberty.  We will stand and speak the truth in love as long as we are able.

Here is what God has in mind:

See that you do not refuse Him who speaks. For if they did not escape who refused Him who spoke on earth, much more shall we not escape if we turn away from Him who speaks from heaven, whose voice then shook the earth; but now He has promised, saying, “Yet once more I shake not only the earth, but also heaven.”  Now this, “Yet once more,” indicates the removal of those things that are being shaken, as of things that are made, that the things which cannot be shaken may remain.  Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us have grace, by which we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear.  For our God is a consuming fire.  (Hebrews 12:25-29)

When the shaking comes, Your life must be founded on the solid rock—personal faith in Christ.
Only that will enable you to stand in the storm of God’s judgment.

This shaking will sift out the wheat from the chaff.  The church is filled with people who profess faith, but may not possess faith.  Easy-believism and cultural Christianity wither under the fire of persecution.

Because the world is upside down, genuine Christians will be described like this, “These who have turned the world upside down…” (Acts 17:6).  In reality the world is standing on its head and saying we are upside down!  Our desire is to put things right-side up!

THE MAJESTY OF MOTHERHOOD

Charm is deceitful and beauty is passing,
But a woman who fears the LORD, she shall be praised.  (Proverbs 31:30)

I thank the Lord for my godly mother.  History recognizes the contribution mothers make.  Napoleon said, “What France wants is good mothers, and you may be sure then that France will have good sons.”  Teddy Roosevelt declared, “If the mother does not do her duty, there will either be no next generation, or a next generation that is worse than none at all.”  What an awesome responsibility and wonderful opportunity a woman has to impact the world.  What makes for a good mother?   Proverbs 31:10-31 gives us God’s perspective on the matter.

The majesty of a mother is grounded in HER VIRTUE (v.10a).  This is the foundation upon which all other qualities are built.  It is the righteousness that comes through faith in Christ.  None can be virtuous apart from God’s grace in redeeming us from sin and regenerating us to new life.  That virtue worked into us will be worked out of us.

The majesty of a mother is found in HER VALUE (v.10b-12).  The scarcer something is—the more value it holds.  Godly mothers are a rare jewel.  Earlier in Proverbs, we are told that whoever finds a wife finds a good thing.  She is trustworthy.  Not only does she not do the family harm, she is a positive force for good.

The majesty of a mother is revealed in HER VISION (v.13-16).  A godly mother is always looking out for the welfare of her family.  She is a hard worker, like the woman pictured here.  Her activity is motivated by her love for husband and children.  Such a woman has a sharp eye for the family finances.  She knows a bargain when she sees it!

The majesty of a mother is disclosed in HER VITALITY (v.17).  She has to be strong to bear the burdens she must carry.  Mom is the glue that holds the family together—the refuge whose arms we run to when we fall down.  This power is not from physical stature, but spiritual strength.

The majesty of a mother is evident in HER VIGILANCE (v.18-21).  When others are slumbering, mothers often have their eyes open to watch out for their family.  Phillips, Craig and Dean have a song, “Mama used to burn the midnight oil down on her knees in prayer.”  I am a recipient of a godly mother’s midnight vigilance.  How many prayers did she invest in you?

The majesty of a mother is noted in HER VIBRANCY (v.22-27).  Godly women dress as becoming holiness—beautifully and modestly—though not extravagantly.  She adorns herself with speech that encourages.  She offers praise for God’s goodness.  Moms are an encyclopedia of wisdom.  Listen attentively and soak it in—you will be the better for it.

The majesty of a mother is consummated in HER VICTORY (v.28-31).  Such a woman deserves our praise!  We celebrate her life.  She understands that time takes its toll on our face and form, but the beauty of holiness endures. She isn’t spending hours looking into a mirror to put on makeup, without investing time before the mirror of God’s Word seeking to look like Christ!  Such a woman has victory in Jesus!  God, give us Christian women like this!

PICKING UP THE PIECES

Now concerning the things of which you wrote to me: It is good for a man not to touch a woman.  Nevertheless, because of sexual immorality, let each man have his own wife, and let each woman have her own husband.  (1 Corinthians 7:1-2)

Should you find yourself in the land of shattered dreams, is it possible to pick up the pieces and move on to a life of fulfillment?  You might have dreamed of marriage and years later you are still single.  Maybe you married and despite your commitment, your mate walked away—divorce dashed your dreams.  Perhaps you were happily married and death snatched your spouse from your arms.  Can you pick up the pieces?  The Corinthians wrote Paul about this, and in the seventh chapter we find God’s perspective.

You can pick up the pieces from DISAPPOINTMENT (v.1-9; 25-38).  It would be a mistake to stereotype all single adults as frustrated people.  Some are quite happy being unmarried.  Scripture teaches that God gives a special gift of singleness to some—a supernatural grace that liberates them to serve Christ exclusively.  Others feel a deep disappointment.  They want to be married, but have not.  There is something worse than being unmarried, and that is marrying outside of God’s will.  Some are so desperate for marriage, they unequally yoke with an unbeliever.  You get the Devil as a Father-in-law when you do!  Remember that in the sovereignty of an all-wise and all-loving God, disappointment can be His appointment.  Devote yourself to living for Christ, wait on the Lord.  Paul was single and satisfied, fulfilled and not frustrated.  You can be.

You can pick up the pieces from DIVORCE (v.10-24).  Paul doesn’t present a comprehensive statement on divorce and remarriage here—he is answering specific questions.  We must look at the whole of Scripture to find the entire teaching.  Although divorce isn’t desirable, it is sometimes permissible.  Paul tells us that if an unbeliever deserts a believer, the Christian is not bound.  Christ also taught that when someone violates one’s vows with persistent immorality, divorce may be allowed.  When divorce occurs for Biblical grounds, then remarriage is permissible.  The goal, however, is to stay together, if possible.  Reconciliation and rebuilding the relationship can be a miraculous testimony to the grace of God.  The believing spouse may lead their lost mate to Christ.  Forgiveness can be expressed, even when trust is broken.  Divorce always brings pain—even when it is unavoidable.  It breaks hearts and children are often the broken pieces.  The church must do all it can to prepare people for healthy marriages, help those with troubled marriages, but minister to those with broken marriages also.

You can pick up the pieces from DEATH (v.39-40).  Unless both spouses die at the same time, then one will face the sorrow of a funeral.  Since the two became one, they will feel like part of them is gone.  The grief-stricken struggle with depression—even anger with God. Thankfully, for His children, there will be a glad reunion day!  Some will remarry.  Make sure you find God’s choice for you, if you do.  You don’t get over this loss—you just learn in time to go with it, and find the supernatural peace Jesus gives.

I pray for those with broken dreams today, that God will help you pick up the pieces!

THE MEANING OF MARRIAGE

“This is why a man leaves his father and mother and bonds with his wife, and they become one flesh.  Both the man and his wife were naked, yet felt no shame.”  (Gen.2:24-25 HCSB)

Marriage is a Divine institution.  The first wedding was performed by God.  It is the fundamental building block for society—and God laid the foundation.  As such, He ordained the parameters that make a marriage.  For millennia, there had been few questions about the meaning of marriage, but in our day, the relationships between people and ideas about marriage have become so distorted that the definition of marriage must again be reasserted.

Marriage is meant to be PURE.  We read of this first marriage and see a man and woman standing before each other with no shame.  There was no shame because there was no guilt.  Their relationship was pure.

The modern argument is, “Why, I wouldn’t buy a car unless I took it on a test drive!”  This is used to excuse hooking up, leading to shacking up, when what needs to happen is a guy needs to man up and if he loves a woman, give her a ring, wed her and only then bed her!  People are not cars to be “test-driven.”  Humans have memories and emotions—and all that is done wrong leads to guilt and shame, which rather than enhancing the possibility of a later successful marriage undermines it.  The foundation thus set with lust and not love, getting and not giving—so when the storms come later, as they surely will—the home collapses.

Another polluted way of thinking is, “If two people love each other, why shouldn’t they be permitted to marry?”  This is used to make a plea for homosexual marriage.  Clearly God formed sexual beings—heterosexual beings, male and female—and designed us in such a way that this is the only legitimate expression for marriage.  The physical union and procreation of the species requires a man and a woman.  Both of these are at the core of God’s design for marriage.

Marriage is meant to be PARTICULAR.  Adam and Eve—one man and one woman—were placed in a monogamous relationship.  This was always God’s design, and even though there are instances in the Old Testament where people practiced polygamy, it was never given Divine sanction, and the problems associated with the practice are evident.  Polygamy is something that is looming on the horizon as the next acceptable perversion of marriage, and has been glamorized in the media in recent days.  This is not marriage as God ordained.

Marriage is to be PERMANENT.  The HCSB renders it, “bonds to his wife” and that’s a great picture of the permanent nature of this union.  When you take two pieces of wood and bond them together, if you later try to break them apart, you do not break the bond, you break the wood.  How many broken homes, lead to broken hearts—and children are often the broken pieces when a marriage splinters.  Divorce is so destructive.  We realize that divorce does happen and it is not the unpardonable sin.  There are at least a couple of reasons given when it may be permitted, although it is never demanded.  Jesus said that a marriage break-up is due to the hardness of the heart—at least on the part of one partner, and often both to some degree.  From the beginning, God’s intention was for this institution to be permanent—a lifelong commitment ended only by death.
Marriage is to be PUBLIC.  Note the leaving of father and mother and the bonding of husband and wife—a public commitment is made where all can witness that a new family unit has been formed.  While it is true that Adam and Eve had no human parents, God used the occasion to establish the pattern and teach the principle of the public nature of a marriage commitment.

“It’s only a piece of paper!”  If two people “commit” to each other, then what’s the point of a legal proceeding?  An argument akin to this is, “What right does the government have to get involved in marriage?”

A public commitment is a legal proceeding.  Government has also been ordained by God for the preservation of society.  Government has an appointment by God to promote good and prohibit evil—its primary function.  The state thus should be a benevolent partner to the church in establishing solid marriages that produce a better citizenry, thus building a better society.  As the home goes, so goes the nation and the church—both profit, and both have responsibilities in regulating and commending marriage through their practices and policies.

Marriage is to be PHYSICAL.  The couple becomes one flesh, naked and unashamed.  Sex is not dirty.  God created it and made it good—very good!  There is a bond formed, an intimacy developed, an expression of love that cements a healthy relationship between the two.  The honeymoon may end in a week, but romance is to remain for a lifetime.  The best way to keep a spouse from seeking someone else’s arms is to hold them tight in yours!  God intends for this relationship to produce godly offspring that will impact the world for Christ.

This is only an overview.  A book could be written—and many of them have been.  But, these truths are drawn from the Good Book—timeless texts inspired by an unchanging God.  When Jesus taught about marriage, this was His authoritative text.  If I follow Christ, then I will submit to His teaching in every area—including marriage.

I have set before you God’s ideal.  We live in a fallen world.  Sin happens and it soon wrecked paradise.  The impact on Adam and Eve’s relationship and family was dramatic.  However, Christ came to redeem us from the curse of sin—in every dimension of life.  So no matter where you may be in your relationship, no matter the failings of the past, or struggles in the present, we can repent and by the grace of God move on.  This is our goal by the grace of God.

THE SHEPHERD’S STANDARD: The Faithfulness at Home

“A bishop then must be…the husband of one wife…” (1 Timothy 3:2 NKJV)

While we have previously stated that a man must be faithful to his wife if he is to be a leader in the church, several questions arise.  Would this require that a man be married if he is to serve as a pastor?  Does this mean that if a man is divorced that that he could never serve?

The sense of the Greek language is that the pastor must be a one woman kind of man.

The literal translation is, “a man of one woman.”  The words, when used of the marriage relation come to mean, “a husband of one wife.”  The two nouns are without the definite article, which construction emphasizes character or nature.  The entire context is one in which the character of the bishop is being discussed.  Thus, one can translate, “a one-wife sort of a husband,” or “a one-woman sort of a man.”  We speak of the Airedale as a one-man dog.  We mean by that, that it is his nature to become attached to only one man, his master.  Since character is emphasized by the Greek construction, the bishop should be a man who loves only one woman as his wife.[1]

Think of the home as a laboratory where character is developed.  While there is much to learn in marriage, it does not require that a man be married to build such character.  A single man may build strong character, just in different ways.  To say that a man must be married to be a pastor would mean that neither Jesus nor Paul would have qualified—and that is unthinkable!  Of course, the nonsense that service to God demands celibacy as Rome teaches is contradicted here.  It is plain that most church leaders would be married, though not mandated that they be.

This would not necessarily preclude a man who was lawfully divorced and remarried—or widowed and remarried even—from being a pastor, if the other qualifications are met—providing he is demonstrably a “one woman kind of man.”  In the impetuosity of youth some made rash choices of a mate who proved unfaithful.  It might be that the man and his wife were both unconverted at the time.  Later, after the marriage ends, circumstances change—and particularly if a man is regenerated and senses God calling him to preach, then with an added level of scrutiny, it may be that he becomes a legitimate candidate for the position if he is exhibiting faithfulness at home in this marriage.

A PRAYER

Faithful God,
You have ever shown faithfulness to us, even when we have been unfaithful to You.  Thank You for being such a patient and loving God.  May we be molded likewise, and may our marriage be a microcosm of Your devotion to us displayed in our devotion to our spouse.
In the name of Our Lord Jesus,
Amen.

THE SHEPHERD’S STANDARD: The Fidelity to Marriage

“A bishop then must be…the husband of one wife…” (1 Timothy 3:2 NKJV)

Our vows before God are serious.  That includes our marriage vows.  Faithfulness to God and faithfulness to others is indispensable in Gospel ministry.  The call to preach is a call to fidelity.  If a man is not faithful to his wife, how can it be expected that he will be true to his other commitments?

The choice of a proper mate is crucial, if you have not already married.  A pastor’s wife will either be the wind in his sails or an anchor to his ship—but, she will make a huge difference in propelling his ministry forward or holding it back.

I know a man—a very gifted preacher—who has never been able to accomplish what he might have done because of a wife that undermined that possibility.  To his credit, he has remained faithful to her through all her issues.  He is to be commended, but one may only wonder what might have been had she supported him instead of burdened him.

So, if you are in a marriage that brings more heartache than help, cast yourself upon the Lord.  His grace is sufficient.  Be faithful and trust Him to make you fruitful.  God can use a difficult spouse to refine our character, and teach us to love those tough to love.  Church work has those in ample supply.

If you aren’t married, seek God’s will before you walk down the aisle.  My hope for you is that should God want you married that you will find a mate like the one I have found!  I am so thankful for a wife that loves God, loves me, prays for me and supports the church!

A PRAYER

O Lord of Love,
I praise You Sovereign Shepherd for leading me to find someone who is just suited to me.  What a gift I have in my dear wife!  Lord, bless her today and care for her.  May I always be faithful to my marriage vows.  Keep the Destroyer away from our home!  Guide each single shepherd and help him serve you as a single man or find the spouse you have for him.  Strengthen each struggling shepherd who is in a difficult marriage.  Pour grace into his life and his wife.  Turn things around!  Do not let him entertain unfaithfulness and use the problems as an excuse for it.
In the name of Jesus our Bridegroom,

Amen.
